Shaw Tec was founded in 1960 by Alan Shaw – a very talented potter & artist. He started this business on a small holding in Fisantekraal where we are still operational today. Alan used the land and bounds of available clay. He put the raw clay through its processes and sold it to all other potters that shared their love for pottery. He decided to extend the business and started making glazes to compliment the clay & pottery sold.
Alan decided he wanted to move to the special town of Greyton and offered for Andy (his son) to take over the existing Shaw Tec. Andy took the bull by the horns at the age of 24 and took the business lock, stock & barrel! There were many challenges – but Andy was determined and took the business to new heights. He focused heavily on growing Shaw Tec, through clay & glaze sales and very importantly the clay Terra cotta tiles that we are most known for.
Andy made some major changes in the early 2000’s and refocused the business! Due to the labour intensiveness & many processes involved in the manufacturing of Clay & Clay tiles, Andy decided to take his passion for the business in a new direction and offer a very similar product, however in a cement range, more reasonably priced, accessible to consumers looking for a more reasonably priced product and a simpler manufacture process.
In 2014 Andy’s daughter Olivia, had some ideas for the business – some new designs, new product’s to add – Andy was open to her ideas and implemented them, the business grew and gained momentum, the fresh set of eyes and idea’s were a perfect fit and Andy was working harder than he had done in a good while!!
The growth of Shaw Tec continued, Olivia was in the background doing the marketing and idea building – but Andy was manufacturing as many tiles as he could and delivering on his service – which always set him apart, he was brilliant.
In the early hours of 23 May 2017 – Andy tragically and very suddenly passed away, leaving behind his LEGACY – Shaw Tec, together with his farm to his daughter Olivia.
Olivia is now the proud owner of Shaw Tec – she is the 3rd Generation to take this business forward. She has had many struggles along the way, but is determined to keep Shaw Tec relevant, top of mind and thriving.
We’re here for the consumers looking for hand made products, products made with love & passion. We are a niche 3rd generation business – we love what we do and will continue to, until maybe a 4th generation wants to take over one day.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story, we look forward to sharing our idea’s and successes with you into the future of unknowns…
